🌻 Public Art and Art as Social Action

Light and color are focal points in my paintings, murals, and drawings. My primary mediums are oil paint, oil pastel, chalk pastel, and charcoal. I am inspired by working on a large scale. The instinct to create works that are much bigger than me was probably inherited. My Great Aunt, Evelyn Turner, was also a small person who made huge paintings. Her colorful abstract pieces had an otherworldly beauty and seemed to flow right off the walls. She sparked my desire to be an artist.

I like my work the most when I am painting in a loose, bold, impressionistic style. I think there is a sense of spirituality in the imperfect and the unclear. Staying loose is a constant practice for me, but when I lean into it, I get closer to depicting a spirit or an essence. In this way, I think art can reflect core parts of ourselves back to us- parts that we may not have even consciously grasped.

I am continually entranced by the healing aspects of art and how it can be therapeutic on both a personal and societal level. As a chronically ill artist, my practice has been a crucial part of my personal healing. My work helps me process and understand my experiences.  Healing comes from the continuous practice of letting go, exploration, and embracing uncertainty. Painting acts as a release, helps me understand myself, and brings me closer to acceptance and peace. On a larger scale, I love to create public art because I think it can help us heal collectively. I believe public art is beautiful, accessible, and can be used as social action. Creativity is a powerful form of resistance and a beautiful tool to build community.Â
